A crew of burglars broke into a money storage facility in Los Angeles on Easter Sunday and stole an estimated $30 million in cash. The heist is believed to have taken place at a GardaWorld facility in Sylmar, a suburban neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. The burglars are thought to have gained access to the facility through either the side of the building or the roof, and were able to crack the vault without triggering any alarms.
The theft was not discovered until the following day when employees opened the vault and found no obvious signs of a break-in. The Los Angeles Times reported that this heist is one of the largest cash burglaries in the city's history, potentially surpassing any armored car heist as well.
The Los Angeles Police Department is working in conjunction with the FBI to investigate the theft, but no further details have been released at this time. This incident comes on the heels of a similar large-scale theft in Southern California two years ago, where as much as $100 million in jewels and valuables were stolen from a Brink's truck at a truck stop.
